Likewise, in my judgment, to construct a Christian world theology which seeks to take into account the insights of the different religions is invalid if it requires that the theologian step outside the circle of his or her own faith and accept a viewpoint that transcends all claims to religious revelation. However, to construct a theology that gratefully recognizes contributions to Christianity from other faiths while maintaining belief in the universal relevance of the Christ is not only possible but is to be recommended.

Accordingly, those who do not hear and respond favorably to the gospel are excluded from its salvific benefits. Inclusivism, on the other hand, takes a more affirmative view of the religions, but, like exclusivism, it also believes that no one is saved except by God's provision for salvation in Jesus Christ. However, there is a significant difference: inclusivists believe that many are saved who never hear the gospel and therefore know nothing of the historical incarnation, but that such persons are saved only through the universal redeeming work of God in Christ.
